Moss mites (Oribatid mites) are world wide distributed and play an important role not only in the ecosystem as decomposers of plant detritus, but also in veterinary medicine due to their role as intermediate hosts in tapeworm life cycle. Moniezia expansa is an endoparasite of the sheep small intestine, which requires a mite containing the tapeworm larval stage. According to previous research, in meadows in temperate climate areas, there are at least thirty to fifty mite species. According to the fact that there are no data about morphological research on moss mites in our country, the main goal of this research was to find oribatid mites on a pasture where sheep graze in order to identify them and describe morphologically. During the research, the grass was sampled five times over five months, and 2227 mites were collected, of which 446 were used for identification. Three groups of mites were identified in researched. The first and most numerous group of mites belongs to the genus Protoribates, the second group belongs to the species Lucoppia burrowsii and the third belongs to the group Brachypilina, with a holoid body structure. During the mites examination not a single mite was found invaded with larval stages. Further research is needed on a larger sample number and a wider geographical area in order to be able to determine other mite species, and among others also those which are intermediate hosts in the development of M. expansa.
