Poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, is the most widespread ectoparasite of domestic poultry, but also of wild birds. During the day, it lives in the crevices of the poultry houses, and at night it is active and feeds on the blood of birds. It can cause serious health problems, egg drop, cannibalism and even death of poultry. In humans, it can also cause allergic reactions. It is very difficult to carry out eradication in poultry farms due to biological characteristics such as a short life cycle, resistance to starvation and resistance to acaricides. The first step in preventing invasion is to strictly observe biosecurity measures to prevent the entry of new populations of D. gallinae. A very important step in the suppression of poultry red mites is the monitoring of the population of poultry red mites. The most common monitoring techniques are the use of corrugated cardboard traps, semi-attractive traps, AviVet trap and automatic mite counter. Increasing attention is paid to non-chemical methods of suppressing D. gallinae such as products of plant origin, vaccines, natural enemies, entomopathogenic fungi, inert dust, essential oils, Q perch, etc. The use of only non-chemical preparations is not sufficient to successfully combat mites, which is why often non-chemical products are used in combination with chemical products. In most European countries, organophosphate foxim, spinosad and fluralaner are allowed. Due to the lack of an effective way to combat these parasites, a multidisciplinary approach that will unite new acaricides and vaccines, immune system resistance control, biological control as well as careful planning of the conditions of keeping a particular poultry species is necessary.
