Abstract | Virus krpeljnog meningoencefalitisa je arbovirus koji pripada porodici Flaviviridae, rodu Flavivirus, serokompleksu krpeljnog encefalitisa.
Abstract (english) | Tick-borne encephalitis virus is an arbovirus belonging to the Flaviviridae family, flavivirus genus, tick-borne encephalitis serocomplex. It causes a disease that manifests itself in the form of mild fever, but it can cause serious neurological disorders with possible fatal or lasting consequences. Tick-borne encephalitis occurs enzootic and seasonally in Croatia, however, an organized system of monitoring TBEV has not been established, and animal studies are rarely carried out. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of infection in horses for differential diagnostic purposes, but also to compare the results of seroprevalence in horses with the rate of incidence in humans to determine whether the data collected via veterinary supervision have significance for public health.
For the purpose of this study, randomly selected sera samples from healthy horses from six different counties were chosen from the ARTERlab archives. The counties were selected based on human incidence. The commercial diagnostic kit "Immunozym TBE IgG All species" (Progen Biotechnik, Heidelberg, Germany) was used for serological diagnosing of TBE. Data on the incidence in humans was collected from the archives of the Croatian Institute for Public Health.
The highest seroprevalence was in Međimurje county with 23.6% positive and 7.9% borderline results. Sisak-Moslavina has a positive 4.5% and 3.4% borderline results. Karlovac has 4.5% positive and 1.1% borderline results. Zagreb has no positive, but has 10.1% borderline results. Brod-Posavina also has no positive, but has a 2.2% borderline results. Istria has no positive or borderline results.
The results of this research are evidence of high seroprevalence and indicate that TBE should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of neurological diseases in horses in Croatia.
Analysis of data from the archives of the Croatian Institute for Public Health and the results obtained in this study shows a correlation between seroprevalence in horses and human incidence, which confirms that horses can be used as sentinel animals for monitoring TBE and that veterinary supervision of this zoonoses could significantly contribute to public health . |
