During evolution, lizards developed various properties of the integumentary and locomotor system to ensure their existence. The specific structure of the skin allows mimicry of lizards, and depending on the occasion, it can be used as a camouflage from predators or as a way of communicating with other lizards of the opposite sex or rivals. The parietal eye serves as a photoreceptive organ that regulates hormone release and body temperature. Certain species have developed special skin membranes by which they can glide through the air. Lizards have the ability to reject the tail, and with this technique they successfully trick the predator into focusing on the rejected tail, while using the opportunity to escape. After discarding the tail, lizards can regenerate new tail. Thanks to the sticky pads, geckos can climb on a smooth and vertical surfaces. Some lizards possess a dewlap, specifically colored within a particular species of lizard, and in addition to defining sexual dimorphism in some species, serves as a communication organ. Femoral pores are unique glands that can be found in some species of lizards, from which are released waxy secretions along with pheromones. Almost all lizards have laterally placed legs, and some species have developed special ways of moving, such as walking on two legs and running on the surface of water. Using these mechanisms, they manage to escape predators. Studying these specific properties, the possibility of their application in modern technologies, such as robotics, medicine, was realized.
