Making 3D organ models using 3D printers is a new way of showing anatomical structures in the anatomy of domestic and wild animals courses. The organs of endangered species are not easily available for teaching purposes so the same holds true for the organs of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) which is the only toothed whale species that permanently lives in the Adriatic Sea. The aim of this paper was to make a 3D printout of the model of the heart of the bottlenose dolphin. The heart of a bottlenose dolphin which was deposited in the collection of the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb in 2017 was used for this purpose. The heart was scanned using a CT scanner and then a digital 3D model was created using the „3D Slicer” programme and printed out using the FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) method. Despite the fact that the method used is not the most suitable for organ printing, most of the outer structures of the heart which are visible on the original organ are discernible. The digital model which was created can be additionally improved and if a better 3D printing method is used, new higher quality models can be made in unlimited numbers. This model will be available to students as a didactic tool of a representation of a heart, but also as an example of a new method of preserving organs of endangered species.
