The causative agent of chlamidiosis/psittacosis, the bacterium C. psittaci, infects various species of birds and humans. Infected birds occasionally excrete the pathogen through the respiratory and digestive systems, so nasal and ocular discharge as well as feces are the main source of infection for other birds or humans. Human are most often infected through close contact with positive parrots, but more and more often through infected poultry (turkeys, chickens, ducks). In this case report of avian chlamidiosis/psittacosis in parrots and child, organ and pooled fecal samples were collected from a dead cockatiel and two budgerigar, and from a child (serum and nasal swab) living in the same household as positive birds. Of all the samples examined, except the child serum, C. psittaci was isolated by real-time PCR. Sequencing of the ompA gene demonstrated great similarity of C. psittaci isolates from parrots and children, and all samples were identified as genotype A, confirming that parrots were a source of disease for the child. In order to prevent the spread of avian chlamidiosis/psittacosis, it is necessary to procure birds from verified sources, monitor the signs of disease in parrots and humans, and strictly adhere to biosecurity measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
