Abstract (english) The female athlete triad is a syndrome that science began to address in the 1990s. The syndrome itself is characterized by three components: menstrual dysfunction, decreased energy availability, and decreased bone density. The syndrome can develop in any athlete, but it is still somewhat more common in sports such as gymnastics, ballet and running. The aim of this research was to determine the level of education of physiotherapy students on female athlete triad. A total of 128 undergraduate and graduate students of physiotherapy participated in the study. A modified questionnaire “Knowledge of the triad of athletes and risk factors of triad among athletes” was used to conduct the research, and it was used an translated with the permission of the author. The questionnaire is reliable and valid. Differences by gender, level of study and previous participation in sports were tested by an independent sample t-test for numerical variables of normal distribution, Mann Whitney for numerical variables for nonnormal distribution, and Fisher test for the nominal variables. The results showed that the total sample did not have sufficient knowledge of sports triad syndrome in women. No differences in knowledge were observed with respect to the gender of the respondents, but the graduate students showed better education on female sports triad syndrome. Respondents which had current or previous sports participation showed better knowledge only in the results of the subgroup of questions related to the prevention and treatment of the syndrome, while the total score and the results of other subgroups of questions did not differ between the respondents who were actively engaged in sports and those whitout sports participation. As the results of this study showed inadequate level of education of physiotherapy students on female athlete triad syndrome it can be concluded that it is definitely necessary to improve the level of education of physical therapists on this problem, primarily because female athlete triad syndrome is a major health problem and may leave lifelong effects on female athletes.
