In this paper, the subject of protection forest is discussed and presented in the broader context of general and legal guidelines and sustainable management, as well as the application of these guidelines in the locality of Senjska Draga. From the historical description of the forests of Senjska Draga and their protection measures, it is clear that the area of Senj is one of the outstanding examples of systematic management of protection forests. Due to the geographical and climatic peculiarities, which are reflected in the pedological and vegetative characteristics, and in connection with the historical and social conditions, such care was necessary for the survival of the people in the Senj area. Thanks to the long and rich forestry tradition, from the second half of the 19th century until the 1st World War, sophisticated technical works for flood restoration, erosion and hydrographic works, as well as biological rehabilitation works were carried out. Today, these structures and fortifications are preserved and appropriate fire protection measures are systematically taken, which in combination allow the necessary ecological balance.
