The subject of this final work is Evaluation of archival material, selection andabstraction. This work is divided into several sections with the goal of presenting evaluationof archival material through history, from the very beginning of archive service to thepostmodern theories that are present even today. Evaluation of archival material as aprocedure carried out by archivists is a relatively new term. The very procedure of evaluation,selection and abstraction of archival material comes as a necessary process due to massproduction of material in the form of records printed on paper. After the formation of modernstates, the procedure of evaluation, selection and abstraction of archival material is regulatedby law. The Republic of Croatia has adopted a law on archival material and archives on thebasis of which the rules on evaluation and procedure of selection and abstraction of archivalmaterial have been adopted as well as. According to Croatian legislation, evaluationmethodology is carried out pursuant to evaluation criteria, categorization of creators and thelist of material with storage terms. This work also shows the procedure of archival materialselection as well as abstraction of worthless material and its destruction.
