Controlling itself as a discipline is recognized in the business world as an aid to management. Although it is still not so well known in Croatia, there are many business entities that specialize in controller services, but also in some larger companies a special department has been designated for controlling. Controlling is carried out by an educated person (controller) who aims to see what steps management needs to take in order for the company to achieve the best possible results and to avoid potential risks. In order for the controller to do his job as efficiently as possible in the future, he must be familiar with the company's past business. Thus, he sees errors in the steps, which are then corrected. For this reason, the relationship between the controller and the management, which is most often defined as friendly, is very important. There are a number of tools used by the controller in order to get the best possible picture of the situation in the company and they are also described in the paper. On the example of the company Vindija d.d. the entire business of the company is described. Vindija d.d. is the leading dairy company in Croatia with numerous associate members through which they have ensured maximum market coverage with their range. Although they do not have controlling as a department in their structure by researching the literature and learned knowledge it is applied some of the controlling tools to create a picture of the business. Using SWOT analysis, analysis of the environment and competitors, and the BCG matrix, the state of the company in the market is identified, as well as potential opportunities that can be achieved in order to maintain market status and gain new customers and markets.
