The aim of this document is to determine the legal status of religious communities in the Republic of Croatia. Defining general terms, starting from the concept of non-profit organizations, through the development of protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, we come to international legal documents that today bind all member states of the Council of Europe to care for human rights and democracy. This is followed by an elaboration of the topic of religious communities, as well as their legal position in the Republic of Croatia. The legal status is not equal among the religious communities, considering Croatian legal system. Great emphasis is placed on the legal position of the Catholic Church in the Republic of Croatia, where the difference between the legal status of individual religious communities is best reflected, as evidenced by the Law on the Legal Status of Religious Communities and Agreements with the Holy See. If the state establishes a framework for granting special status, all religious associations that wish to do so have a fair opportunity to apply for that status, while the set criteria must be applied in a non-discriminatory manner.
