Corn is the primary feed in animal nutrition and is therefore important in pigeon feeding, but data on the corn digestibility in pigeons is minimal and insufficient for modern pigeon feeding, especially of corn hybrids that differ in their physical characteristics. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of corn grain hardness on the in vivo digestibility, consumption, growth, and fecal pH and fecal microbiota in pigeons. In 15 separate cages 15 pigeons were divided into 3 groups whereeach group of pigeons was fed with one of three corn hybrids differing in grain hardness. The results of the study showed that hybrid showing the highest hardessnes has a significantly higherdigestibility compared to the softest hybrid (88.40% vs. 84.69%), but not with the third hybrid of medium hardness and digestibility (87.55%). In addition, feeding with the hardest hybrid resulted in more favorable fecal characteristics: lower but not low pH (7.11) and higher number of lactobacilli in the feces (1.25x1010 CFU/g) compared to the other two hybrids (pH: 7,77 and 7.36, lactobacilli: 3.9x108 CFU/g and 9.2x108 CFU/g). Slmonella was not found in any feces of pigeons regardless of hybrid pigeons consumed. This study indicates the importance of the physical characteristics of hybrids in selecting the appropriate corn hybrid in pigeon nutrition where hard hybrids resulted in higher digestibility and more favorable fecal characteristics.
