Contemporary understanding of developmental challenges and families has undergone significant changes, altering the perception of the role of family and the environment in the life of a child with developmental disabilities. Within the framework of Family-oriented Early Intervention, there is an emphasis on the need for respect and understanding of the complex family dynamics experienced by families of children with developmental challenges. Parenthood to a child with developmental difficulties brings numerous challenges that can significantly impact the quality of family life, especially when the environment provides insufficient support. Often, early developmental support services focus solely on the needs of the child, neglecting the needs of parents and other family members. The lack of systematic support leaves parents to fend for themselves, leading them to seek support in informal networks within their immediate surroundings. The aim of the research was to explore the subjective perception of parents about the informal support network, with a particular emphasis on the support they receive from their environment. The presented results encompass data from thirteen mothers who participated in the second phase of the ENVISAGE project in Croatia. Semi-structured interviews provided insights into their experiences and perceptions of the informal (family) support network. A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted. The research results reveal that, in addition to immediate and extended family members, certain parents perceive individuals as close family members, despite not being blood relatives. Dealing with a child's difficulties poses a challenge to extended family members, emphasizing the importance of support for all family members in facing new situations. Despite this, grandparents often provide instrumental support to parents when in close proximity. Perceived support from spouses/partners includes emotional and instrumental support. Research participants report stress in interacting with the broader community, emphasizing the need for support in the form of respect. The importance of support from other parents of children with difficulties is highlighted through the exchange of experiences, information, and emotional connection, contributing to easing daily functioning and strengthening the emotional resilience of parents, encouraging them to actively participate in providing support to others. Understanding parents' perceptions of informal support helps ensure relevant, effective, and beneficial support for these families, contributing to an improved quality of life for families of children with developmental challenges.
