Abstract (english) ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, and when considering its etiology, special attention must be given to the potential impact of adverse childhood experiences, as these have been linked in previous research to neurobiological changes that affect brain development—particularly in regions responsible for the dysfunctions characteristic of ADHD.
A review of existing studies indicates that ADHD symptoms may be associated with various factors such as maternal stress during pregnancy, attachment and attunement disorders in early childhood, dysfunctional family relationships, and experiences of abuse and neglect. Given the prolonged nature of human brain development and its capacity for plasticity, timely and adequate support can significantly mitigate the long-term consequences of these adverse experiences.
The primary aim of the qualitative research conducted as part of this thesis was to explore specific problem areas common to adults suspected of having ADHD, particularly those related to adverse childhood experiences. While previous research has clearly indicated a connection between these experiences and ADHD, few studies have delved into the specific nature of these experiences. In this study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative data analysis methods. The findings reveal that the adverse childhood experiences faced by this population involve a range of specific challenges, including difficulties in family communication, strained family relationships, inadequate parenting practices, unfavorable living conditions, and a lack of support.
These findings highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to therapy for adults suspected of having ADHD, which should include not only pharmacological interventions but also therapies that address trauma-related symptoms alongside strategies for managing ADHD itself. This research contributes to the understanding of the complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors in the development of ADHD and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing adverse childhood experiences when providing support to individuals with ADHD.
