Abstract
Because of their existence in almost all languages, false pairs represent a hindrance even to trained interpreters and advanced learners, but especially to the ones who are not familiar with them. Therefore, they are an interesting and frequent topic of numerous articles and research papers. This paper presents an overview of errors which occur among students of English language when translating English-Croatian false pairs. Moreover, considering the existing research in this field, this study attempts to compare its findings with the findings provided by the research of other linguists. By analyzing the errors of students and by providing an insight into the results of this study, the paper indicates problems of recognition of false pairing when translating and makes a suggestion to refine the existing teaching process of undergraduate students by incorporating the teaching of false pairs as soon as possible (not just during the graduate studies) in order to draw students’ attention to the existence of these confusable pairs of words and gradually improve their translating skills.

Zbog njihovog postojanja u gotovo svim jezicima, lažni parovi predstavljaju prepreku čak i profesionalnim prevoditeljima i naprednim studentima, a osobito onima koji nisu upoznati s njima. Zato su zanimljiva i česta tema brojnih članaka i znanstvenih radova. Ovaj rad daje pregled pogrešaka koje se javljaju kod studenata pri prevođenju englesko-hrvatskih lažnih parova. Štoviše, razmatrajući postojeća istraživanja u ovom području, ovo istraživanje pokušava usporediti njegova otkrića s otkrićima istraživanja drugih jezikoslovaca. Analizirajući pogreške studenata i dajući uvid u rezultate ovog istraživanja, rad ukazuje na probleme prepoznavanja lažnog sparivanja pri prevođenju i predlaže usavršavanje postojećeg procesa poučavanja studenata preddiplomskog studija uvođenjem učenja lažnih parova što prije moguće (ne samo tijekom diplomskog studija), kako bi se pažnja studenata usmjerila na postojanje tih zbunjujućih parova riječi, te bi se tako postupno poboljšale njihove vještine prevođenja.
