Abstract	This diploma thesis presents a case study of articles on the Scottish referendum of independence published in Croatian daily newspapers. The aim of the thesis is two-fold: 1. to examine the role of translation in international news creation and transformational strategies used in the production of news translation and 2. to examine potential ideologically based manipulations in news texts whose production involves translation activities. The study is conducted on a relatively small corpus of the articles on the Scottish referendum, published in Croatian daily newspapers on 18 September 2014, the day the Scottish referendum was held. The analysis is carried out within the framework of Translation Studies and Political Discourse Analysis, adopting Van Dijk’s concept of mental models. In its second part the study tries to find a correlation between the mental models regarding independence referenda assumedly created in the minds of Croatian people after the Republic of Croatia proclaimed independence following a referendum in 1991 and the way the Scottish referendum was interpreted in the Croatian media. We assume that articles in the Croatian press are biased towards the YES side and that this feature could be traced down in the manipulations of graphical, syntactic, lexical, semantic, rhetorical, pragmatic, dialogical and other properties of the texts.
