Reading is one of key components of literacy. It is particularly important skill for development of other competencies and understanding of content from everyday life. The most important role in development of reading habits of preschool children have parents and their engagement and commitment to child development. For children to become good readers, they need to have well developed pre-reading skills which implies listening and understanding skills, imagination, rich vocabulary and natural curiosity to learn something new. There are two types of reading: one represents amusement and pleasure, and it is voluntary. The other one is called functional and is directed to getting information and learning. Both types intertwine and can hardly survive without each other. Both serve for benefit and welfare of individual. Purpose of this research is to determine students’ interests, reading habits, relation to the book, do they love school reading, which books are favourites, how do they choose books in their free time, how do they get the books, who had the biggest influence on their reading habits, do they, except printed books, also read magazines or electronic books. Important task is to explore do students visit school or public library and how often, what is the purpose of their visit and does this have influence to their relation to reading. Research has shown that active involvement of school librarian in educational process is needed; creativity and interaction of librarians and teachers which will recognise interests and needs of their students, develop exploratory habits, individual development of every student and make them aware of importance of reading as pleasure and amusement and important role in education.
