Abstract
Cilj istraživanja: Cilj ovog rada je istražiti upotrebu TiO2 u lijekovima i hrani te procijeniti njegovu sigurnost i potencijalne rizike za ljudsko zdravlje. Također, rad analizira regulatorne smjernice vezane uz upotrebu TiO₂ u prehrambenoj i farmaceutskoj industriji, s posebnim naglaskom na zabranu upotrebe TiO₂ kao prehrambenog aditiva u Europskoj uniji. Materijali i metode: U radu su korišteni relevantni znanstveni članci i regulatorne smjernice dostupne putem PubMed baze podataka i službenih web stranica EFSA-e, EMA-e i Europske komisije. Pretraživanje je fokusirano na istraživanja objavljena od 2016. godine nadalje, s naglaskom na publikacije od 2021. godine i novije. Rezultati: Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da su nanočestice TiO₂ povezane s genotoksičnošću, oksidativnim stresom i rizicima za ljudsko zdravlje, osobito putem oralnog unosa. Iako su regulatorne smjernice u farmaceutskom sektoru blaže u odnosu na prehrambeni, zabrana TiO₂ kao prehrambenog aditiva izazvala je promjene u industrijskim praksama. Zaključci: Zabrana TiO₂ kao prehrambenog aditiva ima značajan utjecaj na prehrambenu industriju, dok farmaceutski sektor tek započinje procese evaluacije zamjene. Potrebna su dodatna istraživanja kako bi se potvrdili dugoročni zdravstveni učinci, posebno u kontekstu nanočestica.
Abstract (english)
Objectives: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the use of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) in medicines and food and to assess its safety and potential risks to human health. The thesis also analyzed the regulatory guidelines regarding the use of TiO₂ in the food and pharmaceutical industries, with a focus on the ban of TiO₂ as a food additive in the European Union. Materials and methods: The study used relevant scientific articles and regulatory guidelines available through the PubMed database and official websites of EFSA, EMA, and the European Commission. The search focused on studies published from 2016 onwards, with an emphasis on publications from 2021. Results: The results show that TiO₂ nanoparticles were associated with genotoxicity, oxidative stress, and health risks, particularly through oral ingestion. While regulatory guidelines in the pharmaceutical sector are less strict compared to the food sector, the ban on TiO₂ as a food additive has led to changes in industrial practices. Conclusions: The ban on TiO₂ as a food additive has a significant impact on the food industry, while the pharmaceutical sector is beginning the process of evaluating alternatives. Further research is needed to confirm the long-term health effects, particularly concerning nanoparticles.
