Abstract (croatian) Ovaj diplomski rad bavi se ulogom jezika u društvu, njegovim dimenzijama i ranim usvajanjem jezika.
Abstract (english) This thesis deals with the role of language in society, its dimensions and early language acquisition. A distinction is made between the first, second, mother and foreign language. Psycholinguistic factors were used, which enable a language to be acquired. The text comprehends the language acquisition in the childhood, from the infant phase and gives precise indications. Since bilingualism is used as phenomena for the representation of the second language acquisition, the main concepts of it are described in this work. The acquisition of the second language is tested observing a six-year-old girl. The assertion of this work is that the passive prior knowledge has influence on the second language acquisition and allows the new language to be acquired more easily and in less time. This has been confirmed since the girl has already communicated with another girl in the kindergarten, without any knowledge of German language during the first days. She used her knowledge of Croatian language to communicate with the other girl, who could not speak Croatian, but they still understood each other. The acquisition of the new language also led to the fact, that the sentences in the mother language were slowly replaced with the newly acquired words from the German language, resulting in the mother language being replaced by the second language.
