More and more plant protection products are being withdrawn from the pesticide market, including some nematicides. For ecotoxicological reasons, alternative pest control measures are increasingly being applied in agriculture. One of the non – chemical nematode control measure is biofumigation. Biofumigation is based on the control of plant parasitic nematodes by growing plants with a nematocidal effect. Plant used in biofumigation are from the cabbage family (Brassicaceae). The most used plants are mustard, radish and rocket that are sown in spring, summer or autumn. Harvesting of biofumigant crops is done in flowering phase and after harvest they are incorporated into the soil. Maceration of their tissue secrets the chemical compound isothiocyanate (ITC) which suppresses nematodes present in the soil. The effectivness in controlling nematodes is up to 70 %. Biofumigation as a control measure has not yet been investigated in Croatia. The aim of this paper is to present plant species used for biofumigation, agrotechnics of their cultivation and incorporation into soil, determine the effectiveness of biofumigation in the control of nematodes and the advantages and disadvantages of this non-chemical control measure.
