Fishing in the world's oceans has been a peaked, so overfishing of certain fish species and even entire fish communities, is visible in many areas. At the same time, the output of the aquaculture rapidly increases, but part of it includes the catch of other species of fish to produce fishmeal. Therefore, the trends of catches and farming of individual species, as well as in different regions of the world is changing significantly. The basic material for this research are data of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the multi-annual catch and aquaculture. The paper examines in detail the FAO in a multi-year statistics of catches and different species of fish in world fishing zones, in order to identify their trends. Data were statistically analyzed, and trends are established according to world regions and types of fish. The data are also analyzed for the Republic of Croatia. Data on global fisheries and aquaculture were compared with trends in the Croatian fisheries. Fishing in the world, including the Republic of Croatia, has not a positive trend, it stagnating and it is necessary to maintain the current level, while aquaculture production has been increasing steadily and will soon exceed caught organisms.
