Green infrastructure, sustainable development, biodiversity, nature conservation, are just some of the concepts we encounter in various discussions and lectures. Roof and vertical gardens are part of these great entities and are increasingly popular solutions for greening urban areas. In this text the concept of roof and vertical gardens is explored, and with the concepts we combine real examples in the existing location. Therefore, in the first part of the paper, they state clear problems and goals, outline the methods of work and define important terms. The first part of the work is also devoted to the roof gardens where the historical framework for the development of the roof garden has been mentioned, from the period before Christ to today. The rooftops of the roof gardens are described and the benefits that they attach to them. The following are the typologies and the comparisons of these two types of roof gardens, after which the elements and structures of roof gardens and the choice of plant material, depending on the type of garden, are mentioned. The second part of the paper deals with vertical gardens, and the structure of the textual part is identical to the Roof Gardens. Which means that the historical framework then first elaborates the roles and advantages of vertical gardens. It is about typology and elements of vertical gardens, followed by a chapter with technological solutions and a choice of plant material, which also depends on the technology and type of vertical garden. All the previous terminology and typology in the rest of the text are accompanied by examples, and the roof and vertical gardens found in Croatia and the world. And the given examples are subjected to mutual comparisons.
