Transport policy is one of the most important policies of the European Union. EU transport policy is helping to grow the European economy by developing a modern infrastructure network that makes travel faster and safer, and by promoting sustainable and digital solutions (Europa.eu). This thesis will describe the history of transport policy, the characteristics of transport branches, describe the measures taken by the European Union for road safety, transport infrastructure and transport corridors in the European Union. The specifics of integrated maritime policy and intermodality will be highlighted. The ways in which EU transport policy is implemented, how transport affects the sustainable development of the EU and the future of EU transport policy will also be described. The transport sector is a major driver of climate change at both global and European Union (EU) levels. In this respect, the new emission performance standards are more ambitious than the previous ones. However, without a major shift in the power ratio, extensive decarbonisation and car development, the development of decarbonised transport will not be possible. So far, national and EU policies have failed to encourage the decarbonisation of road transport. Decarbonizing road traffic is a challenge; but it is also an opportunity for industry and businesses to continue to develop and produce new products and services. Leveraging new business models enabled by digital technology creates new high-quality jobs. Policy makers and other EU stakeholders need to give priority to environmental protection when implementing future policies, legislative reforms and investing in the environment for the future of the planet when shaping EU transport policy. At the end of the paper, concluding remarks are presented.
