Cement industry is an important industry segment in Croatia. Croatian industry has a one hundred years old tradition of manufacturing cement. Although the cement itself is not harmful for the environment, production of its ingredients is. Responsible management in the context of environmental protection and social welfare is the main principle of cement industry business in Croatia. Analysis of the situation confirmed that Croatian's factories work by the international norms and have introduced quality control system. Purchase of the gas for the launch of the furnaces is the greatest problem in the process of producing cement. Additionally, the European Union demands for the replacement of fossil fuels and usage of waste fuels. The influence on the construction sector is considered to be the most important consequence of the global crisis. For the last six years, consumption of cement in Croatia is marked by a constant decline, which has resulted in capacities of the cement industry that are greater than needed. By means of reorganisation of operations, export to the markets beyond Europe, systematization of work and reduction of the employees, the Cemex enterprise has managed to stop the negative trend in the production of cement. Statstical analyses shows that, according to indicators of productivity, the cement industry is in better position than the industry of non metallic mineral products. Additionally, the average annual net sallary is higher in the cement industry than in the overall Croatian economy.
