Hearing loss is one of the most widespread chronic health conditions in older adults and for that reason there has been a lot of attention in scientific research focused on its influence on different aspects of individual's life. In some areas in the context of quality of life the consequences of hearing impairment are very apparent, but are much less explored, for example, in a domain of acquired hearing impairment effects on significant others, especially spouses. Consequently, recognition and understanding of hearing spouses needs and their perspective on hearing impairment is very sparse. The aim of this paper is to present a review of relevant scientific literature, which was focused on examining the quality of life of hearing spouses of the persons with hearing impairment acquired in the adulthood. The purpose of the presented review is, based on the scientific research to date, to gain the insight into effects of hearing impairment on the quality of life of the hearing impaired person's spouse, as well as in changes in determinate communication patterns and its cumulative effect on socio-emotional aspect of married couples life, where one of the partners is the person with acquired hearing impairment. Various negative effects of acquired hearing impairment on the quality of life of the hearing spouses of the individuals with the acquired hearing impairment in adult age are shown in this paper. This paper has also brought up the strategies which are used by couples to minimize negative effects of hearing impairment on their everyday functioning. Some of the strategies seem to deepen couple's difficulties, while some of them effect positively on couple's adjustment to various changes due to hearing impairment onset. Furthermore, this paper especially emphasizes the identified importance of inclusion of spouses into aural rehabilitation and there are shown different treatment options with focus on communicational and other hearing spouses's needs. In literature review, the need for interdisciplinary approach to this subject, as well as implications for further research of this complexed area is specially pointed.
