The aim of this research is to determine the level of awareness of dyscalculia among the inhabitants of the city of Split and to check the relationship between awareness of dyscalculia among respondents and characteristics such as age, gender and education. For the purposes of the research, a questionnaire entitled "Questionnaire on the level of awareness of dyscalculia" was developed. 315 people, aged 18 to 65, were interviewed in the area of the city of Split who voluntarily decided to participate in the research. Out of a total of 315 respondents, 92 (29%) of them heard about the term dyscalculia so they completed the questionnaire and their data were further processed. The percentage of 29% of respondents who are familiar with the term dyscalculia indicates a low level of awareness of dyscalculia among the inhabitants of the city of Split, while the average score on the questionnaire of 64.9% shows a sufficient level of basic knowledge about dyscalculia among surveyed participants. Limited knowledge has been found on questions related to the characteristics, treatment, and frequency of dyscalculia. It has been shown that most respondents have a partially accurate, simplified perception of dyscalculia as a computational difficulty. It was found that less than half of the respondents recognize the often present problems with spatial orientation (25%) and mathematical language (42.4%) as features of dyscalculia, which confirms the findings of previous research (Chideridou – Mandari et al., 2016; Sousa et al., 2017). Statistically significant differences were found in the overall level of knowledge between the two educational groups, with high educated respondents achieving better results. No statistically significant differences were found in the overall level of knowledge between respondents of the three age groups, as well as between male and female respondents. Nevertheless, the gender variable was shown to be influential on one of the individual variables – the one related to knowledge of mathematical language, with women achieving a better result.
