Visual functioning plays an important role in everyone's life. It describes the way in which a person uses their vison in everyday activities. The effect that visual functioning has on every aspect of a person's development stresses it's importance. For that reason, reduced visual functioning disturbs the development and requires adjustement to new functioning conditions. During the accepting and adjusting process, a visually impaired person is exposed to high levels of stress which further complicated the adjusting process. On the other hand, it is proven that stress has a negative effect on the biological aspect of visual impairment. Therefore, it is concluded that the connection between visual functioning and stress works both ways. The aim of this paper is to determine the connection of said phenomenon by researching available croatian and foreign literature. Moreover, possible intervention options that could prevent or alleviate the negative effects of the earlier mentioned connection and could consequently elevate the physical and mental health, just as the overall quality of life of a visually impaired person have also been reserched. In conclusion, it is shown that the holistic and individual approach is of high significance in the medical treatment and rehabilitation of visually impaired people, as is the collaboration of various experts which determins the need for an interdisciplinary approach. The importance of formal support is also manifested in empowering, not only the visually impaired person, but also the members of their family who offer the irreplacable informal support. Certain psychological treatments were proven efficient in reducing stress levels linked to reduces visual functioning. By ensuring complete high-quality support for a visually impaired person, the negative effects of poor health would be significantly reduced and their quality of life would be elevated to the highest possible level.
