Narration is a skill that is being developed our whole lives. By analysing narrative discourse, we can obtain a lot of information regarding linguistic abilities of individuals. From an early age, children are exposed to various linguistic structures and a rich vocabulary through shared reading activities. Many research studies have shown that children who are read to more often have better narrative abilities, but this connection hasn’t been as researched in adulthood. The goal of this study was to analyse and describe narrative abilities, specifically the microstructure of narrative discourse, and the reading habits of adults with typical language development. Narrative samples were collected from 50 participants using the Croatian version of the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) and analysed. Correlation coefficients were calculated between reading habits, syntactic complexity, and lexical richness. The research results showed a statistically significant correlation between adults' reading habits and syntactic complexity measured by the mean length of communication units. From this, we can conclude that adults who read more frequently have better narrative abilities. However, this correlation was not statistically significant when syntactic complexity was measured by clausal density. No correlation was found between lexical richness and reading habits. These results imply significant individual differences among adults and different ways of using their syntactic knowledge. Various factors that were not being controlled in this study may also have an influence on individuals’ narrative skills. This research provides information about the reading habits and narrative abilities of adult Croatian speakers, which is still a very under-researched area, and contributes to the speech-language pathology practice, which often involves assessing language abilities through narrative discourse.
