Hearing loss is considered one of the most common congenital disabiliities, and with the development of technology, cochlear implantation is becoming more common. Development and level of language competence in children and students with cochlear implants have not been studied thoroughly in Croatia. This paper provides insight to language skills of elementary school students, who have been implanted before the age of five. The goal of this preliminary study was to determine the level of receptive vocabulary and grammar comprehension knowledge and the effects of the duration of implant use on those skills. Furthermore, the correlation between vocabulary knowledge and grammar structures comprehension was examined. The sample included six elementary school students, attending 2nd to 7th grade. Students were assessed using the Croatian version of Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-III-HR) and the Croatian version of Test for Reception of Grammar (TROG-2:HR). The participants achieved below average scores on vocabulary knowledge with respect to their chronological age and average scores with respect to their hearing age. Also, students achieved below average scores on grammar comprehension test with respect to both chronological and hearing age. The correlation between vocabulary knowledge and level of grammar comprehension was not determined. Results suggest that this group of participants, taking into account given norms, lags behind their hearing peers, meaning that they do not achieve expected receptive language skills based on their chronological and hearing age
