Various forms of crime today are following rapid technological developments and there is increasing number of crimes commited via phone, mobile phone, text message or e-mail. As a result, new methods of investigation and treatment of incriminating contents are developing that require expertise and knowledge in the field of speech, voice and linguistic content that fall within the broad area audio-forensics. One of the elective courses in Special Education and Rehabilitation Sciences is Forensic acoustics and phonetics on a study direction of Speech Language Therapy. This course is introducing the issue of the eponymous area of science that is poorly covered with staff in the field of speech therapy profession in Croatia. The aim of this paper is to present in detail the area of forensic acoustics and fonetics, explore and highlight the strengths of speech therapists as experts whose specific knowledge in the domain of their profession can contribute to solving criminal cases through the expertise in this field of science. Since this is a review of the research work, the work will be given an introduction as defining the areas of forensic acoustics and phonetics, speech therapy determinations as experts, followed by description of standards in voice and speech acoustic analysis, an overview of available and commonly used software for acoustical voice processing, and display of specific research in the areas of hearing impairment, fluency disorders, voice disorders, autism spectrum disorders and language and speech disorders caused by traumatic brain injury or stroke (aphasia) with an emphasis on speech therapy as well as experts and the possibility of greater involvement of speech pathology staff for their knowledge and competence in working with these populations in the processing of acoustic materials and taking statements for court purposes.
