Introduction: Deafness is a complete or partial loss of hearing in people. It impairs the ability to transmit information to the environment. We distinguish between complete and partial hearing loss. The prevalence of deaf and hearing-impaired people in the general population is about 5% according to WHO. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate nursing students' knowledge about deaf people and communication with deaf people in relation to age, gender, secondary education level, year of study, place of study, type of study (full-time or part-time), current work status, and years of work experience. Study design: cross – sectional study Participants and methods: The study included 86 respondents. The respondents were students at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health in Osijek. Full-time and part-time students, undergraduate and graduate students from Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Sveta Nedelja, Nova Gradiška and Pregrada participated. The research was conducted using a questionnaire developed for the purpose of this study. Results: Out of a total of 86 respondents, female respondents, as well as respondents who know a deaf person, showed better knowledge. There is no significant difference in the results regarding the year of study and the place of study. About 87.2 % of the respondents think that knowing some form of communication with deaf people would greatly facilitate the work of medical staff. Conclusion: Students show low knowledge on issues related to communication with the deaf, leading to the conclusion that knowledge of communication with the deaf should be improved to facilitate nurses' work and provide quality assistance to the deaf.
