AIMS: To examine the Nursing Graduate Students' Knowledge of Bipolar Affective Disorder in the Graduate University Study Programme in Nursing at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek. TYPE OF STUDY: A cross-sectional survey was conducted. METHODS ISSUED: The respondents were 96 students of the Graduate University Study Programme in Nursing at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek, located in Sveta Nedelja. The data was collected using a Questionnaire on the Nursing Graduate Students' Knowledge of Bipolar Affective Disorder, created for the needs of this thesis. RESULTS: The respondents were mostly female, under the age of 42, married or cohabiting, employed, living in the city and in their second year of study. Most of the respondents did not know a single person with bipolar disorder, although most of them had encountered them in their daily work. Only 17,7 % of the respondents believed that they had enough knowledge to provide quality nursing care to people with bipolar disorder. The average number of correct answers was 61,88 ± 17,84 (arithmetic mean ± standard deviation), out of a possible 96 correct answers. The majority of the respondents (82,3 %) demonstrated a good knowledge of bipolar affective disorder, while the rest showed a lack of knowledge. Their knowledge was not related to the observed general characteristics of the respondents, to knowing people with bipolar affective disorder, to encountering them in everyday work nor to their self-assessments of knowledge. CONCLUSION: The respondents had average good knowledge, which leaves enough room for planning interventions during formal education, but also during lifelong work, which would contribute to a higher level of knowledge and better future nursing care for patients with bipolar affective disorder.
