The research aim: Research the dynamics of needle stick injuries in the period from 2018 to 2022 with an emphasis on the University Hospital Centre Zagreb and the University Hospital Centre Sisters of Charity. Study draft: Retrospective and observational study. Subjects and methods: Employees of University Hospital Centre Zagreb and Clinical Hospital Centre Sisters of Charity who experienced and reported a needle stick injury from January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2022 were included in the research. The data was collected through the annual reports of the Committee for Hospital Infections of both University Hospital Centers. Statistically significant variables are: type of needle stick injury, occupation of the injured employee, year and institution where the incident occurred. Results: In the period from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2022, the Republic of Croatia recorded a total of 3,554 needle stick injuries. Most of the exposure incidents were recorded by a needle stick, a total of 68.62%, at UHC Zagreb 76.76%, and at UHC Sisters of Charity 83.06%. The largest number of reported stabbing incidents was recorded among nurses, the total number in the Republic of Croatia rose to 51.37%. There is an insignificant increase in stabbing incidents during the pandemic of the COVID-19 virus in the mentioned institutions, and the total number in the Republic of Croatia is 1,930 incidents. Conclusion: Although the assumption is that not all needle stick injuries were reported and the study is limited in that way, especially when it comes to the incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic. The presented statistical analysis shows significant data such as the primary object of injury is a needle and the most affected group by profession are nurses.
