Research objective: The objective of this research was to examine the level of stress and anxiety among dental medicine students of all years of study in Osijek, and to determine the factors that affect the increased level of stress and anxiety as well as to examine the connection of the mentioned factors with the mental and physical health of the students. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Subjects and methods: The participants were students from all years of study in Dental Medicine in Osijek, and the sample of participants was obtained through random selection. The research was conducted using an online survey questionnaire. Results: The conducted study found no significant differences in the symptoms and consequences of stress and anxiety among students, with respect to the year of study. Symptoms primarily develop due to being overwhelmed with coursework. Among external factors, a favorable financial situation proved to be the most important, as it results in less stress or its absence related to studying, fear of exams, and fear of the future, specifically regarding job prospects. Additionally, there was a correlation between academic performance and stress; students with higher grades expressed less fear and aversion towards attending classes and were less concerned about effectively organizing their study time. Analysis of the results showed that female students exhibit physical and emotional signs of stress and anxiety significantly more than male students. The factors identified as contributing to increased levels of stress and anxiety included a hectic lifestyle, temperament and character, lack of physical activity, poor diet, financial instability, and family pressures and problems. Conclusion: Psychological stress systematically contributes to poor mental and physical health, including oral health. Dental students in Osijek exhibit symptoms of heightened levels of stress and anxiety. For this reason, it is important to place greater emphasis on preventive action through education and appropriate thematic workshops.
