The dissertation proposed a solution and analyzed the action of a new active structural element of synchronous generators - the damping stator winding. Its influence on the characteristics of the turbogenerator was investigated on the example of two-pole and four-pole generators, and the considerations are valid for any machine in which this winding would be installed. The operation of the stator damping winding is considered in the framework of the classic two-axis theory of electric machines, while the analysis was carried out using the 2D finite element method with the use of analytically calculated stray reactances for parts of the winding in the frontal space. It has been proven that the damping stator winding works in all modes of operation, since it reacts to any change in the magnetic field that occurs in the stator yoke, on the outer rim of which it is located. It affects the values of the excitation current that magnetizes the stator as well as the harmonic content of the field in the stator yoke. The influence of the stator damping winding on the reduction of noise of electromagnetic origin was analyzed using discrete Fourier transformation (DTF). Although significant, this influence is not unequivocal and depends on the geometry of both the machine itself and the stator damping winding, and it is necessary to consider it for each specific case. Measurements of the losses in the stator package also proved the influence of the damping stator winding on the reduction of idle losses. The installation of this element is particularly interesting due to the reduction of the load on the excitation winding in revitalizations with increased power, in generators that require a high level of utility, and in machines with the highest unit power.
