This paper analyses how visual arts influence pupils’ writing both on theoretical as well as practical level. I have conducted an experimental research of the influence of Impressionist paintings on pupils’ written descriptions of open spaces. The purpose of the survey was to determine the influences of suggested Impressionist works of art on pupils’ written descriptions of open spaces. The results of the survey have shown that the artworks have influenced pupils’ descriptions in terms of selection and writeup of motifs noticeable in paintings, have directed the attention towards the description and have ensured bigger success in required writing. The descriptions done by control groups have shown a higher level of authenticity in the selection and writeup of motifs, and the pupils have frequently used their own experiences and imagination, as well as emotions, attitudes and personal impressions about the space that was being described. Control groups have more often written descriptions due to the inclusion of narrative elements. Although the results of the conducted research did not indicate the visible impact of artwork on student descriptions, they provided a new and unique approach to access to the content, which could be of great value in focusing students' attention and encouraging oral or written expression.
