Abortion is the source of a lot of controversy. Numerous debates about abortion can be divided into two groups, people who are for the abortion on one side and its opponents on the other. The fundamental bioethical issue for those two groups is whether the embryo is a person or does it become a person in the moment of birth (or at any other stage of development). Is abortion a murder of the embryo? What should we give the preference to, the right to life for the embryo or a woman’s right to abortion. The aim of this thesis is to display the issues from the viewpoint of the abortion advocates and abortion opponents. Abortion advocates believe that embryo is not a person, which means that abortion is not murder. They also think that a woman has every right and a free choice to abort. Abortion opponents think that the abortion is the greatest moral crime, since it represents the murder of the embryo which violates the fundamental human right, to right to life. In this thesis we will also discuss the types and methods of abortion, contraception and types of contraception. My goal was to indicate what I think contraception really is and what the real function of it is. This thesis will state the views of ethics that are based on natural law, the modern liberal philosophy and also the views of the different religions. One of the chapters is about Bernard Nathanson, M.D. because he is the example of a doctor who changed his position in a radical way, from performing abortion to designating it as moral evil.
