The settlement of Makar, under its Latinized name of Muccurum, has been known for over 1 450 years as a Christian settlement. The founding of Makarska Diocese in 533 AD at the regional council in Salona marked the zenith in the development of Christianity, but it did not mean the survival of the Diocese. As the only city along the long coastline from Vrulja to Neretva, Makarska played a decisive role in the spiritual, political and economic life of the entire littoral region. The gentle coast, the fertile land, the favorable position and the abundance of fish have for centuries lured the ancient peoples, however barbaric they might have been, to settle there. If there was lack of proof to that truth, frequent inscriptions found at those seaside places during digging activities would be an obvious sign. Based on their content characteristics, inscriptions can be dedication inscriptions and general liturgical inscriptions, while epigraphic topography is accompanied by a short description of the features of the site or the archeological microunit from which that particular inscription stems. The overlapping of cultures and civilizations along the Croatian historical area is an important feature of the Croatian history. The analyzed inscriptions are strong witnesses, both in form and content, of a continuous and rich clash of the East and West in the Makarska area, especially during the Turkish occupation, as well as of the language affiliation and conscience of the old inhabitants of the littoral region together with their clergy.
