The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of authoritarianism in addition to sociodemographic characteristics in the explanation of contemporary sexism. Data were collected through an online survey, with a sample of 862 adult participants from Croatia. The study utilized the Modern Sexism Scale and the Authoritarianism Scale. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted with two models of predictors. The first model included variables such as gender, age, education level, economic status, place of residence, and the importance of religion. The second model added authoritarianism as a predictor. Authoritarianism, in addition to sociodemographic characteristics, explained 11% of the variance of modern sexism, while together these predictors accounted for 40% of the variance in modern sexism. Male gender and the importance of religion were significant positive predictors of modern sexism, while education level was a significant negative predictor in the first model. By introducing authoritarianism into the model, it becomes the most significant predictor of modern sexism and changes the relationship between the variables. Gender and the importance of religion remained significant positive predictors, while the level of education ceases to be significant. Age became a significant negative predictor, and economic status emerged as a significant positive predictor. These findings suggest that specific sociodemographic characteristics are associated with modern sexism and that authoritarianism significantly influences these relationships.
