The Ottoman Empire was founded in 1299 and managed to exist up until 1923 when it became the Republic of Turkey. Although the Ottoman Empire never was as technologically advanced as other leading European empires, it made efforts to keep up with Europe in the domains of agriculture and the military. However, it seems that printing was not of much interest to them. The Ottomans believed printed books had less allure than manually reproduced ones, and with the majority of the population being illiterate, there was no need in the market for rapid book reproduction. Furthermore, there was also a religious reason for the delayed adoption of printing, which shall be discussed in further detail in this undergraduate thesis. Despite all that, printing workshops named basmahane could be found in the Empire as early as the fifteenth century. Namely, the non-Muslim population was allowed to reproduce books using the printing press. Printing workshops under the patronage of the Muslim population began to open only in the eighteenth century when the effects of the industrial revolution reached the Ottomans, which resulted in the first Muslim printing workshop being opened in 1727, with the permission to print non-religious books. The further evolution, rise, restrictions, and other important developments up until the very fall of the Empire in 1923 shall be presented in great detail in this undergraduate thesis.
