Sažetak (engleski) In February 2020, the entire world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Around this time, the Croatian capital was hit by one of the largest earthquakes in this area in the last hundred years. The aim of this study was to examine how these disasters affected the content of the participants' dreams, as well as the emotional tone of dreams and the frequency of nightmares. One of the problems concerned the difference in the emotional tone of dreams and the frequency of nightmares in participants categorized by certain demographic variables: gender, age, level of education and a variable called concerns about COVID-19. Another problem concerned determining the relationship between dream content and the emotional tone of dreams, the frequency of nightmares and the level of COVID-related concerns. The study involved 648 participants (85.3% women). The level of COVID-19 concerns was measured by the abbreviated version of the questionnaire Concerns related to COVID-19 (CAS-5 items) and some items of the Mannheim Dream Questionnaire (MADRE) were used to assess the emotional tone of dreams and the frequency of nightmares. Descriptions of dreams were obtained through an open-ended question where participants were asked to describe one of their recent dreams. The results showed that younger participants, participants with a lower level of education and participants who expressed a moderate level of COVID concerns had more negative emotional tone of dreams, and female participants, younger participants, participants with a lower level of education and the ones who expressed moderate and high levels of COVID concerns had more frequent nightmares. Appearance of COVID-related terms in participants’ dream descriptions was not significantly related to the emotional tone of dreams or the level of COVID concerns but was related to the frequency of nightmares. Dream descriptions contained fewer COVID-related terms than expected. Job-related terms appeared with similar frequency as COVID terms, mostly in a negative context.
