The conceptual metaphor theory postulates that metaphors have a big impact on our thinking, expression and behaviour through the metaphor transfer effects. Also, studies have shown that there are individual differences in experiencing of those effects depending on differences in the tendency for metaphor usage. The metaphor usage tendency refers to the preference for metaphoric expression and thinking compared to literal expression and thinking. The aim of this study was to examine if there is a connection between the tendency for metaphor usage, emotional competencies and creativity. The sample consisted of 296 students and data was collected through an online questionnaire. To measure the tendency for metaphor usage we translated and adjusted the Metaphor Usage Measure (MUM; Fetterman and sur., 2016). We measured creativity using the Creativity Self-assessment Questionnaire and as a creative thinking measure, we used the Remote Associates Test. For measuring of the emotional competencies, we used the Emotional Competence Questionnaire. The results showed that there is a low significant correlation between the tendency for metaphor usage and the self-assessment of creativity, but there was no significant correlation between the tendency for metaphor usage and creative thinking, nor emotional competencies. Concluding, individuals who prefer metaphoric thinking and expressing maybe evaluate themselves as more creative than individuals who prefer literal thinking and expressing.
