The Czech people and culture were in a very unfavorable situation at the end of the 18th century due to the strong Germanization carried out in the Habsburg Monarchy. That in turn made the Czech language incapable of dealing with the complex and extensive topics of art and science of that era. Josef Dobrovský laid the linguistic foundations for the recovery of the Czech language by describing the linguistic situation in detail in his works on the Czech language. Josef Jungmann was at the head of the next generation of revivalists whose goal was to save the Czech language and culture. It was objectively not an easy task at all, but Jungmann did not let himself be discouraged and was determined to create a new Czech lexicon in order to prove that the language is capable of fulfilling even the most difficult linguistic tasks. His contemporaries and like-minded people helped him in his endeavors. He advocated education in the Czech language since his teaching days in Litoměřice. There he began working on his five-part dictionary, Slovík česko-německý, which he would work on for 34 years. Furthermore, he translated the linguistically demanding Paradise Lost by John Milton. It deals with philosophical and abstract topics, which proved that the Czech language is truly suitable for such large and complex works. With the large five-volume dictionary and translation of Paradise Lost, Jungmann proves the development and richness of the Czech language. With this, he also realizes his original idea of creating a multifunctional modern national language from the Czech language.
