Environmental pollution is a problem that is getting more and more attention nowadays. Due to the sudden industrial development and the increasing intensity of anthropogenic activities there is an increasing number of pollutants in the environment. Volatile organic compounds, which under normal pressure and temperature conditions easily evaporate, are one of the most significant groups of compounds that cause atmospheric pollution. There are numerous methods to prevent the release of volatile organic compounds into the environment. Catalytic oxidation proved to be a promising process for the degradation of volatile organic compounds and one of the most efficient and economically most acceptable processes for their oxidation / decomposition. The aim of this research is to develop ceramic monolithic catalysts for catalytic oxidation of aromatic compounds. A gaseous mixture of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene (BTEX) in nitrogen was used as a model component. During the preparation of monolithic catalysts, commercial cordierite monolithic supports of different channel dimensions were used and catalytic layers were applied on them. The research involves finding the optimal chemical composition of the catalytic bed, using different combinations of transition metals (manganese, copper, iron, nickel) and palladium as representatives of precious metals. Catalytic oxidation of BTEX was carried out at different operating temperatures with a constant total flow of reaction mixtures. Mechanical stability testing of prepared monolithic catalysts has also been demonstrated. The prepared ceramic monolithic catalysts showed acceptable mechanical stability of high performance for oxidation of the mixture of aromatic compounds, where complete conversion of all components of the mixture was achieved already at a temperature of 200 ⁰C, depending on the chemical composition of the catalytic layer. A comparison with the activity of a commercial monolithic catalyst (Purelyst PH-304) was also performed and appropriate conclusions were drawn.
