The aim of this work was to prepare the physically modified cellulose and determine the mass of the adsorbed polymer depending on the adsorption time. With physical modification it is possible to alter the properties of the cellulose surface so it could be used as an additive in polymer matrices. One way to modify surface properties is to adsorp a polymer that has the required hydrophobic properties. In this paper, homopolymer, poly(docecyl-methacrylate) -PDDMA and copolymer, poly(dodecyl methacrylate-co-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) -PDMAEMA-30 are synthesized by the free radical polymerization in toluene. The composition of the copolymer was determined by NMR spectroscopy and was found to contain 33,69 mass.% DMAEMA. For the preparation of the suspensions, microcellulose and polymers were dissolved in toluene. The stability of the prepared suspensions was determined by a sedimentation test and it was visually determined that the suspension of microcellulose with PDMAEMA-30 is more stable than the suspension with PDDMA. The weight of the adsorbed polymer could not be determined by measuring viscosity of polymer solutions before and after the contact with microcellulose. Physically modified cellulose was obtained by filtering the microcellulose from the polymer solution and drying in a vacuum drier. Infrared and NMR spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of polymers in FMC samples.
