The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of modifying the surface of certain polymers and glass with silanes. Silanes, as silicon compounds, have different applications. They are primarily used as coupling agents, crosslinking agents, and as surface modifiers of some materials. Depending on which atoms are attached to the central atom of silicon we distinguish silanes, organosilanes and polysilanes. For the aforementioned applications, organosilans which can react both with inorganic and organic surfaces are most often used. Silanes can alter the properties of surface hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity. This property is determined by measuring the contact angle of the material surface with water. A contact angle of less than 90° indicates a hydrophilic surface, while the surface having a contact angle greater than 90° is hydrophobic. In this study we have investigated the possibility of surface modification of low density polyethylene (PE-LD), high density polyethylene (PE-HD), polylactide (PLA), acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) and glass. Evonik silanes, which have commercial names Dynasylan DAMO, Dynasylan SIVO 160, Dynasylan 6490, and Dynasylan SIVO 214 were used. Surfaces of said polymers were processed by dipping in pure silane, blend of water and silane (1:1 ratio) and 2 % silane in ethanol solution and after treatment and drying, a contact angle was measured from which the conclusion was reached that the surfaces of some of the tested samples can be modified with the applied silanas.
