Speech acts are statements uttered in certain circumstances, that is, the smallest unit of analysis in communication. We distinguish between speech acts that can be true or false, the so-called constants and speech acts that actually express doing and at the same time represent action or doing, the so-called performatives. This thesis analyzes the apologies and requests that pupils address to their teachers. Speech acts of apology and request are classified as performatives. The survey was conducted with a survey questionnaire in June 2021 and 86 pupils from the fourth to the eighth grade of the elementary school Ljudevita Gaja in Osijek participated in the survey questionnaire. The aim of this research was to analyze strategies pupils use when apologizing and requesting in the classroom and to determine the effectiveness of apologies in the classroom. Apologies are divided into four categories – being late to classes, absenteeism, unwritten assignments and unlearned material. The research also includes pupils' opinions on how much teachers accept their apologies, and the most interesting student apologies were collected. Requests are divided into three categories - going to the toilet, leaving classes and asking help with learning. The results show that pupils most often use polite phrases I'm sorry and I apologize when apologizing to teachers and that the strategies they use are mostly aimed at stabilizing and maintaining relationships with teachers. Pupils' requests are most often accompanied by an explanation or statement of reasons, and the strategies they use are also aimed at maintaining relationships. According to most pupils, their apologies were accepted.
