In the ten-year-period since it was founded, the Five Stars Movement has become the strongest political party in Italy. Normally, that would not be surprising were this party not very unconventional. It evolved from a weblog owned by its founder, TV presenter and comedian, Beppe Grillo. There are a few key concepts that define this party. It evolved from cyber-space, its idea is to gather as much voters as possible in that space and through the years create foundations to implement digital direct democracy. Furthemore, it is a populist party but it avoids the trap of unidimensionality by offering a broad range of left and right policies; it tends to be a catch-all party. The party is very personalized which explains its success in the Italian party system which tends to favor such parties. In its first parliamentary election, the party already became a runner-up, but its original refusal of participation in coalitions and the bonus electoral system, which was later changed in favor of a much more proportional one, prevented it from coming into office prior to 2018. Paradoxically, by finally coming to power, the party experienced huge drop in voter support from and is expected to go back to opposition in the near future.
