Introduction. A stroke occurs as a consequence of a lack of oxygen in the brain, which leads to termination brain functions. It is the leading cause of physical disability in the world, but also in Europe. Acute cerebrovascular disease, especially ischemic stroke, appeared as a serious complication of infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome COVID-19. Purpose. The purpose of this research was to determine and compare the outcome of treatment of patients with ischemic stroke who did not have COVID-19 and patients who have had an ischemic stroke during the COVID-19 disease using the Barthel index. Respondents and methods. 38 respondents who had ischemic stroke and COVID-19 disease and were admitted to the Neurology Department of the General Hospital Varaždin participated in the research. They were categorized into two groups. The pandemic group, which consisted of patients with ischemic stroke who had COVID-19 disease during a stroke. The other group, the non-pandemic group, was consisted of the same number of patients with a diagnosis of ischemic of stroke who did not have COVID-19 disease. The data was taken from the medical record documentation from patients who were threated on a daily basic by performing physical therapy during their stay in hospital. Results. A statistically significant difference in functionality status of patient was proven in both groups by analyzing 38 respondents, from admission to discharge from the hospital. The Barthel index value is higher at discharge from the hospital compared to the same value at the time of admission to the hospital. That indicates on improving of functional independence. Conclusion. The conducted research provides a picture of a clear and progressive functional improvement from admission to discharge from the hospital among stroke and COVID-19 patients.
