Today emergency departments around the world as well as in the Republic of Croatia are facing a large inflow of patients with various problems. The objective of this thesis is to present the amount of third age patients older than 65 years of age who were admitted to the Emergency Department of the General Hospital “Dr. T. Bardek” in Koprivnica during 2017. The thesis shows the patients’ main health problems, triage categories, medical diagnoses, the average waiting time for examination by a physician, the average time of treatment, the ways patients arrive to the Emergency Department and the percentage of hospitalized patients upon treatment at the Emergency Department. The thesis includes data obtained by insight and analysis of the medical documentation of patients at the Emergency Department of the General Hospital “Dr. T. Bardek” in Koprivnica during 2017. The hypothesis about a more frequent admission of third age patients older than 74 years of age to the Emergency Department via emergency service may be discarded. The research has shown that the number of third age patients aged 65 to 74 who stay at the hospital upon treatment at the Emergency Department is lower with statistical significance. Furthermore, it may be concluded that third age patients older than 74 do not arrive to hospital more frequently via the emergency service. The χ2 test points to the fact that there is no statistically significant difference between diagnoses with which third age patients older than 74 arrive to the Emergency Department (χ2=285.04, p<0.01), i. e. there are statistically more third age patients older than 74 who come to the Emergency Department due to various other problems and diagnoses as compared with cardiorespiratory issues or abdominal pain. Due to the specific needs of third age patients, healthcare workers should have additional knowledge in the area of geriatrics in order for healthcare and nursing care of third age patients at the Emergency Department to be as good as possible.
